Nope, didn't work when I started from the Finder, so Butler is in the clear.

Eventually, I rebuilt the project from scratch (copying settings across only
when I was sure I wanted them) and it *still* exhibited the weird behaviour.

Uninstalled CHUD 4.0 in case that caused it.  Nope, still weird.

Uninstalled XCODE and reinstalled from scratch.  Nope, still weird.

Cleaned All, Rebuilt All a few times, and suddenly...

... we're all better.  It launches just fine from within XCODE so I'm happy
with the niggling doubt in my mind that I have no idea what I blew clear
with all those re-installs.  Perhaps some sort of Launch Services cache?

Anyway, it works now so touch wood, and make sure I back up a lot more often
than I did...
