Since you are just running a configure script, gcc_select is the best way to go.

However, if your project is in Xcode you can also set the target in question to use gcc 3.3 instead of gcc 4.0. Go to the Rules tab of the target inspector and change the 'C source files' rule to use gcc 3.3.

An example of what wont build is php-4.3.10, during the configure it complains about zlib not being available yet if I uninstall the dev tools, reinstall the dev tools without gcc4.0 I can build this project and any other without any difficulties at all.
