Okay, time for a bit of Xcode project file extension history :)
Xcode 2.1: .xcodeproj
Xcode 1.0-2.0: .xcode
Project Builder 2.x: .pbproj
Project Builder 1.x: .pbxproj
As of Xcode 2.1 we will recognize any of the prior extensions and
offer to create an upgraded .xcodeproj file alongside the older
project file. In Xcode 2.0 and prior to we offered to upgrade the
project file to the latest version without changing the extension.
In any case, currently there is no public documentation on the
Xcode project file format.

In that case the latest XCode 2.1 pbxproj has comments describing the
various sections of the file. Not really documentation, but might

you enough for your purposes.
