Almost every new Mac model from the 512K (early 1985) to last week's new machines has had new chips that require new firmware and some changes to the OS. In general, only the current shipping major OS version is qualified on any new CPU release. For a while we shipped Macs that ran both the newest Mac OS 9 and the newest Mac OS X, but in general you should expect that new hardware will not necessarily run older operating systems. We understand how troublesome it is that developer tools are bound to the OS version. This is a big tangle to resolve but we are working on it. If you have problems with Xcode 2.0 please report them and we'll try to address them. We've brought over thousands of projects from Xcode 1.5 to 2.0. Note that by using gcc3.3 and the 10.3.0 SDK you should be able to cross-develop from Xcode 2.0 to Panther systems. If you need to qualify your application on a variety of hardware and software configurations, you can use the ADC Compatibility Lab. See http://developer.apple.com/labs/index.html for details. |
