or run 'file ...' on it -- that will read the physical headers of the file and should tell you what sort of file it actually is
Run xxd or strings on it first... it would be interesting to see what it is. Then you can use srm on it... although, that has got to be one of the more heavy handed ways of getting rid of it! ;)
