Adding images in IB

I've got a Cocoa NIB and I want to use some images in it. The NIB is in an open Xcode project, I have several images in the project, the NIB and images are all in the same target and are all in the Copy Bundle Resources build phase. They're also in the same folder. No images show up in IB and if I try to drag an image into IB I get the message: "Images can only be dropped on Nibs included in an open project. Open an appropriate project and try again.". I've tried with many different types of image and have tried alternative extensions (.tiff, .tif). I've quit Xcode. I've started IB from within Xcode and separately to no effect. This works if I create a new project, but I want this to work in my massive existing project.

What  am I missing?
