So far (correct me if I'm wrong, please), I've figured that if you
want a universal binary, you have to target the 10.4 sdk, it won't
work on 10.3.9.
Not so. As of Xcode 2.2, you can use per-architecture SDKs, compiler
versions, and Mac OS X deployment targets to have one architecture
target one OS and the other target a different OS, all from the same
Xcode target.
