Actually, from the command line, opendiff fileA fileB will open FileMerge on the two files. This is analogous to the "open" command on the command line.

If you have TextWrangler, "twdiff fileA fileB" is the analogous command. I much prefer TextWrangler's diff because I can edit the files while diffing them. If you don't have twdiff installed, launch TextWrangler, go into Preferences -> Tools, and click "Install Command Line Tools". I configured Xcode to use TextWrangler for CVS diffs, by going to Preferences -> SCM -> "View comparisons using:".

I was going to say that TextWrangler is much faster than FileMerge at opening files, but I just tried FileMerge and from a quick test it *seems* to have been sped up since I last used it, though this may be due to my having a faster new laptop now.
