You're right that it certainly does have a .svn.

Even after deleting that directory, though, I still can't add the nibs from within XCode, and they still don't show up with a '?'.

It really seems to be pretty broken. :-(

Thanks for spotting that .svn duplication, though! I'm sure that would have cause problems with whatever Subversion method I used.

I guess when you add a localization, Xcode makes a copy of the english nib - including the .svn directory. So subversion thinks this (nib-) folder is already under version control.

Yup. That's exactly what happens. So you'll have to remove the .svn directory from the new (localized) nib manually. Then you'll be able to check it in (using Xcode or any other method).
