Most of the available IDEs have migrated to this model. I think it is in
part to deal with the size of projects (would you really want to close 40
windows by hand?).

It is also in part to deal with the MDI "multiple document windows contained entirely within one large window representing the application" paradigm that has been dominant on some other platforms for the past couple of decades. No IDE on the Macintosh that I know of used this type of interface prior to the release of Mac OS X.

I can see the usefulness in some situations. I think I would find it most useful if it worked like Safari's tabs. That is, it used tabs, and I could have multiple windows open, but each could have one or more tabs in it. If I can only have one window that holds multiple documents that's a bit too restrictive for my tastes. But, maybe Xcode 3 already does what I want. I expect to be able to play with it some in the next few days (I downloaded a copy of Leopard but there's some kind of problem with it).
