I don't think there's any ideal solution for managing 40 files if you're actively working in all of them, but does seem that it would help if you could have any number of windows open, with each used to edit one or more files of your choice.

That is what I really want. I have a 30" display but can only see one file
at a time, and even on that big display there is a limited about of vertical
real estate. Having multiple windows with tabs ala Safari would be better
for making good use of the available screen space.
