That's it! I remember now pressing that button back in 2001 and
I've never looked back since. I have a feeling that you also have
to shrink the attached editor down to nothing as well or it tends
to turn itself back on.

Is there a way to split editor pane horizontally, say, for a wide
screen display?
You mean something like View > Split Horizontally command? ;-) Or
you can press the Option key while you click the splitter icon above
the vertical scrollbar.
