I had wondered whether it might have to do with that, but as there is no Kerberos service running on the server, I had thought we'd be okay. As you suggest, I'll send my question over to the macosx- interop list.

I can't be sure this is _your_ issue, but NFS in Leopard now users Kerberos for authentication instead of userid. I'm not sure which is the default, though. You might try asking on the macosx-interop list:
