I guess it's a matter of personal preference. I think most of the
larger deployments around here reserve one OS X Server machine for
controller duties. It doesn't have to be a screaming fast one.
Then again, if all your machines are dual-dual, you may not want to
give up 4 slots to run a dedicated controller.
Agreed, though I have found that things work smoother if the
controller and the client are on different machines. I have had no
problems with controller+agent or client+agent on the same machine,
but all three (controller+client+agent) on the same tend to be a bit
much in my applications. The client is receiving lots of results
while the controller is sending jobs and receiving results to ship
over to the client. Having both client and controller on the same
machine tends not to run quite as smoothly as when they are on
separate machines.
