In my experience, GUI trouble can be a sign of some overlap between your public and private networks. Make sure your private network IP range is totally different from ALL subnets connected to your public network. Test by pinging, and also by dns lookups, from a computer not on the private net.

Yes, I am using a private network : FireWire-800 with IP connecting both
directly; it seems to work just as well as connecting GigE between the two).
