Hi All,
I have done 2 1.4.2 to 2 upgrades and here are a few pointers.
As a first point, the XSAN I did first had 25.9 million files, so as aguide to what to expect it is pretty good.
1. The process is time consuming and somewhat painful (timewise)
2. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. Follow the migration steps in the guide and go through the CVFSCK process methodically!!
5. Make sure you upgrade to 10.5.2 first and verify your XSAN is working 100% before going any further.
6. Go through the steps of upgrading, with your Primary MDC first followed by secondary etc. I have my own steps here as I like to be the Safety Monitor!!
7. Run the CVFSCK process again to verify all is good
8. Now WAIT!!!! DON't PANIC - the rule of thumb is that it will take about 1 hour per 1 million files to process the conversion of the XSAN 1.4.2 to 2.0 MetaData. You will know something is going on as the Primary MDC for your volume will be at about 100% utilisation. DON'T TOUCH OR STOP the MDC at this point as it will start it all over again if you do.
9. ..... and magically the volume will reappear. (If you follow all the steps, take your time, and be patient)
As a side note, I had the luxury to create a clean XSAN 2 and and upgraded 1.4.2 XSAN volume. Particularly for small files, the performance is noticeably different. between an upgraded XSAN and a clean XSAN.
Also note that if you are moving data between the two XSANs as described above, use CVCP, works a treat!!
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Rick Wylie
