Hi,

- Is there a limit to the level of the tree of a SAN volume?
- The SMB service is able to properly manage all PC stations on a SAN
volume for this type of use?
- Is it good to have only 2 SAN stations and so many PC workstations
via Ethernet on a SAN volume, and not the opposite ?
- Is it advisable to use a PC connected to the SAN as a client with
StorNext FX2 for re-sharing it to the PC stations ?

It will be a good idea not to overload the standby/secondary MDC with all the services you are running.
Please consider getting a Mac client for the AFP and NFS file sharing services and a Windows client for the CIFS/SMB service.
The standby/secondary MDC should not be running any of these services, including Open Directory.

Hi everyone !

The site consists of 2 Xserve (Mac OS X Server 10.5) Xsan 2 metadata
controllers, a Promise RAID 6TB (2 metadata disks in Raid 1,  2x6
disks in Raid 5, 2 spare disks) , 2 Gigabit Ethernet switches
(Metadata & Public), 2 Mac Pro (Mac OS X Client 10.5) Xsan 2 and 30 PC
workstations (Windows XP 32bit) accessing the SAN volume via Ethernet.

The first Xserve has to be only a metadata controller while the second
Xserve is failover metadata controller, but also DNS server, master
OpenDirectory, AFP, NFS, SMB. An aggregation of 6 Gigabit Ethernet
links on the Public LAN was set up on the secondary controller for re-
share the SAN volume as a single share point. The SMB service is
configured in standalone, WINS Server, Group Master Browser,
TCPIP_NODELAY socket option enabled.

PC stations are used to do 3D animation using softwares like 3ds Max,
Maya, XSI and some of these stations (there are 8) are cluster nodes
(Windows 2003 Server).
MAC stations use Final Cut Pro Studio 2 and Adobe After Effects, but
not Qmaster services.

The tree for this volume includes 10 levels of subfolders maximum.
Some folders can contain up to 3000 files of small sizes (less than 6
MB).


My problem is: The PC stations encounter large delays (up to a minute) while browsing through the folders on the SAN volume, but not when copying files. The AFP and NFS protocol does not suffer from such concerns.


That is why I have a few questions :

- Is there a limit to the level of the tree of a SAN volume?
- The SMB service is able to properly manage all PC stations on a SAN
volume for this type of use?

via Ethernet on a SAN volume, and not the opposite ?
