John: how do I use curl? What is curl?
Short answer (my shell is bash, hence the $):
$apropos curl
curl(1) - get a URL with FTP, TELNET, LDAP, GOPHER, DICT,
FILE, HTTP or HTTPS syntax
(and a bunch of other stuff)
($whatis curl would also have worked)
Long answer:
$man curl
not reproduced here except for this introductory part:
DESCRIPTION
curl is a client to get documents/files from or send docu-
ments to a server, using any of the supported protocols
(HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, GOPHER, DICT, TELNET, LDAP or FILE).
The command is designed to work without user interaction
or any kind of interactivity.
curl offers a busload of useful tricks like proxy support,
user authentication, ftp upload, HTTP post, SSL (https:)
connections, cookies, file transfer resume and more.
(note the "ftp upload" hidden in there.)

(If you've never even once let the weekly scripts run in your Mac OS X
installation, apropos and curl might fail.)
