Jim,
Logon Warning Banner Implementation System supplied methods to display logon
banners vary. For Mac OS X this will be implemented in two ways. Using both
of these ways will cover the warning banner for both the Aqua interface and
the terminal login.
Add a line to the .plist of the login window to show the Warning Banner text
on the same screen where the user enters their username and password.
- By Using the Property List Editor
- Open the Property List Editor.
- Open the /Library/Prefernces/com.apple.loginwindow.plist file.
- Expand Root. - Highlight Root and Select the New Child Button.
- Add LoginwindowText as its name.
- Place the Warning Banner Text in the Value Field.
- Save the plist file.
- Editing the motd file to show the Warning Banner after a terminal session
is invoked. The system displays the contents of this file via the global
/etc/.login and the /etc/profile files, depending on which shell is started.
- Edit, or create, /etc/motd.
- Insert the banner text.
- Write /etc/motd.
- Chmod 444 /etc/motd.
- Chown root /etc/motd.
- Chgrp sys (or bin) /etc/motd.

With invaluable help from Dave C, I now have CAC login working under 10.4.
Still have an issue: 10.4 is not displaying the standard DOD Warning like
10.3 did.
Is this by design, or is something still misconfigured?
If by design, short of adding it as a text file as a startup item, how can
we make the DoD warning appear at the login screen?
Thanks,
Jim

Just curious if the address below is an approved site for DOD Mac users to
go and get a copy of Norton AntiVirus software for the Mac? Notice somewhere
on the site it requires you have a .mil domain name before you can download
any software. Anyone have some background on this site?

Dave,
As an integrator of Oracle solutions on Apple servers in latin
america, there's a lot of opportunities with Oracle being deployed on
Mac OS X Server.
But Oracle needs to fix the 1GB memory limit they have in Oracle 10g
10.1.0.3 for their SGA (databases), a lot of customers will back out
of the Oracle/Xserve solution. What's the point of having a 16GB of
RAM Xserve if Oracle can only address 1GB of RAM to its dbs.
Besides that, Oracle and Mac OS X Server make an attractive couple.
Best,
Federico D.

I have used that site, but the Army wants Army users to get it from
https://www.acert.1stiocmd.army.mil/Antivirus/symantec.htm
<https://www.acert.1stiocmd.army.mil/Antivirus/symantec.htm>
The site you asked about is DOD CERT. The one above is Army CERT. The DOD
one requires that your IP address be in DNS as .mil. The Army site requires
an AKO login.

Trying to configure two different OS X machines as NTP servers (one
is OS X 10.4.6 and the other is OS X 10.3.9 Server, on different
networks isolated from the outside world).
ntpd is running just fine on the machines but my other machines
(Linux & Unix) can't seem to see the OS X ntpd server but they can
see a Linux ntpd server just fine (I check the standard firewall
issues, no problems there).
I've done a lot of reading and searching for info about ntpd and all
I can find is how important it is to restrict access to your ntpd
server.
*** In theory all ntpd's run as client and server by default, did
Apple disable the server part in their built of ntpd?

How do I uninstall CAC functions?
Background.
1. I am running OS 10.3.9
2. I downloaded and installed common access card viewer
3. I downloaded and installed package for ActivCard usb reader. This
is the reader I have. I was following the guidance in Shawn Geddis' Set
up Guide v1.0.
4. I used cac_setup -d in terminal to enable smart card services
Problem
1. The Smart Card Login Window appears, but CAC is not recognized
2. I know it is a good card because it works on pc
3.I tried to turn smart card services off by using command cac_setup
-off. I receive this message
cac_setup -off
* /etc/authorization.orig exists and
/etc/authorization
does not seem to be a symlink--this is an unfamiliar
configuration, bailing
I want to start over, perhaps with SCR331 or other usb reader.
Thank you.

Tom,
Unless anyone who actually has experience with this has a better
idea (or Shawn happens to have a brilliant idea) I'd try moving the
authorization.orig file and running cac_setup -off again.
From a terminal window type
sudo mv /etc/authorization.orig ~
to move the authorization.orig file into your home directory. I can't
promise this will work, but it at least resolves the error cac_setup
is reporting. Of course I also can't promise this won't cause some
other problems with cac_setup!
Good luck!

Some might assume there is a difference between Norton Utilities and Norton
Anti-Virus, particularly with regards to platform.

There is of course, but given the text of the question, and the content of
the URL referenced, I took the subject of the message to be a slip of the
finger.
