The SCR24x readers do not stick out, though the card does stick out
when inserted. I have not found this to be any more clumsy than an
outboard reader, and it means I don't have to find extra space to
pack the reader in my laptop case.
There are other technical means that are more elegant and more
Apple-like.
Are any of them actually available for current Macs and current smart
cards?
On my MacBook Pro, I've had to regress pack to using a PIN pad (a
CRYPTOCard RB-1 token) for access to my personal VPN while on the
road, which seems like a step backwards. If I had to use a CAC
(rather than being able to run CRYPTO-Server and switch to RADIUS
authentication instead of a client certificate), I'd be out of luck
unless I wanted to drag along a USB reader, which seems even less
Apple-like: yet another dongle to pack, with yet another cable to get
tangled up, using up one of my USB ports.
Looking forward, though, something like an inductive loop that would
let a Mac read a proximity card might be a nice solution--though one
that'd probably a nightmare to certify. A HID reader, for example is
*way* too easy to sniff.
