Great question. I will try to ask someone tomorrow.
I know a lot of people with pretty poor Internet speeds for which this will also be an issue. And of course, you need something for re-installing should something bad happen.
There was a trick for making an install DVD from the downloaded package from the App Store for the first Lion beta. I did it, but I can't remember what it was. I found the instruction for how to do it online somewhere. I don't know if that trick will hold true for subsequent releases.
