It will bypass the carrier's texting system, a potential financial hit to the carriers (who I suspect will just jack up the data rates to make up for the lost revenue).

I bet most people will continue to keep a texting option in order to text to their friends without iOS devices, but the day of people purchasing unlimited texting contracts will go the way of people paying $2 for ringtones.
