Apologies in advance for the vagueness of this reply. I know that for
folks trying to make a living in this area - more concrete answers are
necessary, but I'm not the guy to give them out. I can only tell you
what (little) I know. If you want to complain more loudly, contact me
offline and I can try to come up with some email addrs for you.

We're working on improving our documentation - I don't know if we have any
app specific documentation plan, but for the Finder, at least, it seems like
a reasonable idea to have some.

In any event, our documentation is probably going to lag behind for a while.
There are lots of issues we're still trying to figure out. So this mailing
list is probably your best resource, but unfortunately I'm not sure (e.g.
as in I doubt) the app folks are on it.

In general - we try to avoid having apps invent custom accessibility items.
As I mentioned before, doing so is equivalent to requiring special case code
in every assistive app - which is a headache for everyone. Undoubtably, there
will be a couple, but I don't expect a lot.

More likely changes you'll see will be re-representing things in terms of existing
roles to make them easier to work with. Things like an unstructured group containing
buttons becoming a list.

In summary, we're making lots of changes to fix deficiencies being uncovered by
our screen reader effort. The APIs are staying stable (a couple minor changes),
but there are a fair number of changes in the constants and fair number in how
they're being used. If you get a seed of the screen reader you can see a snap
shot, but it's something that continues to evolve.

The Panther Finder implements some new accessibility attributes, roles or

for the Finder's accessibility support, or can someone at Apple describe it
for us -- including a list of usable items?

I'm particularly interested to know if the Finder issues any accessibility
notifications.

Are there any other Apple applications that implement custom accessibility
items?

In general and for the future, how are we supposed to learn about custom
accessibility roles, subroles, attributes and notifications in applications,
