Greg,

Arguments about high-level programming languages aside, it couldn't be
easier (or more natural...or intuitive?) than:

say "page one"

Presuming, of course, that Standard Additions/AS still contains the 'say'
command.

There are (for OS9, and perhaps OSX) additional OSAX which provide speech
commands. Mark Aldritt's comes to mind.

'say' can be passed a string or even a file reference. (There is a very
interesting performance of Hamlet by the Mac voice collection available on
the web. Quite entertaining.)

I don't believe there is a need for any third-party freeware (Speech Queue
or other) to achieve what you want. Interesting idea for a personal
motivator. Best of luck learning AS.
