In addition to the script that Gnarlie makes available at:

http://www.Gnarlodious.com/OSX/AppleScript/Finder-Equalize.html

- with a kindness that I'm sure Bernard silently appreciated - let me mention that a Smile tool named "Synchronize folders", available at:

<http://www.satimage-software.com/en/downloads_more_s.html>

allows to use "backup" without writing a script. "Synchronize folders" retains the paths you use for your backups, it has auto-completing fields for entering paths, option for POSIX or Mac paths, and a "swap" button to easily synchronize one way then the other - performing what Gnarlie calls equalization.
