tell application "Finder" set ical_app to item "iCal" in folder "Applications" of the startup disk set ical_app to ical_app as string open alias ical_app end tell
I modified the script a bit ...
set appsFolder to (path to applications folder) tell application "Finder" set ical_app to (item "iCal.app" of appsFolder) as alias ical_app as text open alias the result -- this works in Snow Leopard end tell
This worked in both Snow Leopard and Lion. The problem may be that your first line is not an alias. Using aliases fixes many problems.
