Odd. It works for me, but then I don't use project documents, so maybe it's because of my test case. The dictionary says they should return aliases.

BBEdit 10.1.2 (3152) does not return aliases as it says in the dictionary; it returns file references.
If this is different on your system please let me know.
Please also send me a complete version of your working test-case, so I can test here.
