It's probably worth making the point that the other solutions you posted are all full "legal" syntax -- only this one is, well, out-of-date. From the sdef man page:
Complex types such as `list of integer' or `number or text' are now expressed using type elements, not complex
strings. For example:
before:
<property name="tabs" type="list of integer"/>
after:
<property name="tabs">
<type type="integer" list="yes"/>
</property>
OTOH, that change was made in 10.4...
