I think most of us in MUG leadership roles have probably had the
maddening experience of a vendor no-show, but you can't let get you
down, even though it can really mess up your disposition for that
particular meeting. I wouldn't dare to defend the vendor who just fails
to show, but sometimes other "stuff" happens. We have had vendor reps
call from the road with car problems (TWO flat tires on a bridge) and
family emergencies (child taken ill suddenly). Now before anyone says,
"Well, those were emergencies," and accuses me of being insensitive,
both situations left us without a presentation for that meeting. What
you nevertheless need, as a number of other people writing on this
thread have said, is a backup plan. We all back up our hard drives,
DON'T WE? Well, maybe we should all back up our meeting's presentations
with something produced in-house. A few good back up plans have been
mentioned and LIMac's board of directors has certainly come up with a
few, but another alternative might be to have an arrangement with a
local vendor or computer store (if there are any in your area) or a
local business which uses Macs, for an "emergency" presentation. If a
representative of one of those mentioned is a member of your MUG, so
much the better. Your board could discuss the problem with them and
arrive at an understanding that will provide you with something useful
to present (and then hope that they come to every meeting!)
Having said all that, I would like to say that LIMac's problem has been,
more often than a vendor no-show, getting someone to make the initial
commitment in the first place. Times have changed and many vendors say
that they can't afford to send anyone out on the road to do
presentations. Because of this situation, we have been forced to do more
in-house presentations which seriously taxes our ability to then become
creative with "emergency" plans. It IS a problem for leaders, but then
if we didn't like a challenge, we wouldn't be MUG leaders.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.
