I don't know if you can generalize from our experience, but we found that you
need a lot of subscribers for a general list-serv to be successful. Many
people just enjoy "lurking", so we need enough members willing to actively
post on the list-serv for it to work.
I don't have any magic numbers to suggest...and I assume that there are other
issues such as the commonality of interests of the members. But this might be
helpful...
Of AWUG's 15,000 members, only about 800 are subscribed to the
AppleWorks/ClarisWorks list-serv (which AWUG supports but doesn't "own"). The
list-serv is quite active and helpful to many of our members, but I'd be
surprised if more than 100 of the subscribers actually post to the list.
That might give you some numbers to consider.
