Well, that depends. User groups give Apple tons support that Apple
doesn't pay a dime for.
When new Mac users discover that the guys at the Apple store really
aren't interested in helping them once they make the sale, where do
they go? They go to user groups, and we supply the tech support that
Apple is unwilling or unable to provide.
Every user group I've been involved with evangelizes for Apple every
chance we get. We go to local tech events and set up a table or booth,
and preach our beliefs that Macintosh computers are the best. Don't you
all do the same?
As for Apple over-charging for minor updates ($19.95 for a CD), that
goes right back to the refusal to allow user groups to re-distribute
the software to members.
None of us think Apple should not make a fair profit. We've all agreed
to pay more for a computer than we had to just by buying a Mac. User
group members even pay for the privilege of doing Apple's tech support
for them. But then shouldn't we expect Apple to do a little more for us
than just sending us old Apple merchandising junk?
The truth is, our user group would not be affected one bit if Apple
stopped its user group program tomorrow. Nothing from nothing is still
nothing.
What I hope, by stating my opinions in this forum, is to encourage more
members to speak up and to encourage Apple to understand what WE do for
THEM, and that a little more appreciation from Apple is in order.
One of the earliest authors of the Tips and Tricks column in the old
MacUser magazine, Phil Russell, says it like this, "Love the Mac,
tolerate Apple."
Apple has made a lot of men rich, or richer than they would be
otherwise. It's a shame that Apple shows such little regard for their
most devoted customers.
