Hello all,
The discussion about Apple's support of MUG's has been interesting and
i'd just like to add my story.
I run the multimedia studio at Cornell College. The college is
decidedly unfriendly to macs. Through attrition and enticements of
"better" windows based machines, the administration has reduced the
number of faculty and staff users to maybe a dozen with another 20-30
students who are braving the mac road.
I started a user group in September to get everyone together, share
stories, offer support, and in general just to help one another. Sound
familiar?
I had been speaking with our regional educational contact at Apple who
was being helpful and was going to send me a 17" iMac to showcase on
campus along with some posters and other material to get some
enthusiasm amongst the mac users. A date was set but alas, the computer
never arrived. I called, he had been laid off. I had a number for his
supervisor but he never returned my calls. So that plan was shot, but
we were still going the user group route.
I followed the guidelines to set up a Campus user group, promoted the
group, and scheduled our first meeting. We had 15 people at our first
meeting and 20 at our second. 40 mac users on campus have signed up to
be part of the group. It was very encouraging. The administration was
starting to recognize us as a viable group of computer users who
weren't going to be switching to windows. Progress was being made.
I received a reply to my group registration from Apple stating that
before we could be recognized we needed to have had a meeting and built
a website. I was to reply to the email when those tasks were done. I
built our website <
http://www.cornellcollege.edu/mug> and we had our
first and second meetings. Shortly after the first meeting, Apple
changed the user group contact. I replied to the email stating that we
had now fulfilled the requirements to be recognized by Apple. We
haven't heard anything since. It has been two months. People were
excited about the user group store, the ambassador discs, and other
support it looked like we could get from Apple as we continued to hang
on to what macs we had left and create a new round of user enthusiasm.
As 2002 ends and we have received no response from Apple, I'm about to
throw in the towel. I understand Apple has no obligation to help us and
i'm not asking for anything other than for our user group to be
recognized as official and to get access to the benefits that other
U.S. based (sorry Matt) groups have.
That's our story.
