In answer to your question we used to have an excellent library which was run
by a member who was (coincidentally - NOT!) a librarian. This kept her
involved in a way that she enjoyed. When she moved away a couple of members
tried to continue running it but found that it cramped their lifestyles (in
terms of space and responsibility).
So a couple of years ago we voted to disband the library and give the books
out to the membership (as giveaway drawing items) on the condition that
people be more willing to share access to their personal libraries. This
actually has worked out better as a) members do purchase books that we would
not have either requested or purchased for the group and b) more members seem
to get together outside of meetings to exchange information and borrow books
and even the occasional piece of hardware! (cameras, scanners and once even a
printer that one member was considering purchasing).
One thing I have noticed is that with the commitment to share the books that
way it keeps the local members more involved and also seems to have increased
the participation of members in answering questions and helping because they
can no longer assume that everyone has the same access to the same
information. (Assumption on my part - I know...) As to well-stocked - our
library had reached over 500 books by that point - and we only "retired"
books if they were no longer usable and falling apart.
If effect it is like having access to a group of mini-libraries.
What is most interesting is that our members almost never seem to take
advantage of the User Group programs that the various publishers offer! When
they want a book they want it right then and there and if they cannot find a
member with a copy they will run up to the local Barnes and Noble and buy it.
I know that our solution may not work for everyone but fortunately it has
here. And this way no one member has to give up a lot of space to host our
library.
