Every now and then MUG peple have a crisis of faith, it's important to
keep them on the straight and narrow and get them into the confessional
where they can rid themselves of the fear, the uncertainty and the
doubt.

People accuse Microsoft of devious tactics all the time.
Unfortunately, it seems that Apple's efforts, at the very least, are

Who is a reliable alternative? I wouldn't consider Gateway to be viable
so that leaves Dell, HP and IBM. All of them supply Windows which means
that they are far from a reliable alternative.
Witness the latest .Mac affair,
Yes, let's rehash that argument all over again.

And Apple is focussing on the enterprise market more and more. It would
seem that Apple has been listening when people say "My kids in school
use Windows because that's what is in the business world". Right, says

if we're going to survive.
Dell has become the #1 maker of personal computers; Apple's share, it
seems, continually drops.
Dell has shipped the greatest number of computers this quarter. That's
not surprising considering that it is now three years from October 1999
when a lot of companies got new computers (due to the Y2K bug) and are
now coming to the end of those 3 year leases. My own employer is
completely strapped for cash yet we're all getting new machines because
the lease is up and it's cheaper to just renew the lease.
That means that 40 000 desktops are being supplied by DELL and they are
just replacing...40 000 desktops that were...supplied by DELL. Net
market share increase for Windows? Zero.
I prefer to think of it this way. The market out there is already 100%
Windows. Every person that buys a Mac is a win and an addition to the
Mac market share.
And I think their own mistakes contribute greatly to this. Their
treatment of user groups is hot and cold at best. I see no sign that
they are waking up.
I'm guessing it's tough to run a forward-looking company with only
hindsight. Apple did incredibly well this quarter to post a profit
(before non-recurring iterms).
