Hi,
From one who has been there: a few years ago, a few of our Board members
wanted the Club to buy a computer. (It was a beige G3 desktop computer.) At
the time, I really did not want to spend the Club's money on it, but I did
not want to use my veto, so I abstained when the Board voted on it. After we
bought it, the computer was used at most 2 or 3 times for Club presentations.
One of the Board members who was a strong proponent of it left the Club not
long after we bought it because he worked for EDS & he had to change to a
Windoze computer. Soon after that, a second strong proponent left the Club
because her job changed & it required her to buy a Windoze computer for use
at home. Another of the strong proponents never used it. He decided it was
easier for him to use his own computer because it was set up the way he was
used too, so he never even used it once.
The computer went completely unused until we got a new Newsletter
Editor. Our new Newsletter Editor didn't want to buy a new computer at that
time, so he borrowed the Club's computer to use to put together the
Newsletter for a time before he bought a couple of new computers.
In the meantime, after we had used valuable Club funds to buy the beige
G3, Apple came out with new computers that were incompatible with our Club's
then current projector. A new projector at the time that would work OK cost
us almost $4000. We bought the new projector, but we have been strapped
enough for funds ever since then that we are not even able to keep around a
spare bulb for the projector (almost $400). That leaves us nothing to
accumulate for a new projector when we need one.
Needless to say, our Board has always regretted the purchase of the
computer. They wished that I had vetoed it. So, from a voice of experience, I
suggest you not buy a computer!
Save your money to buy a new projector.
Sincerely,
Marianne Young,
President,
Mac-In-Awe MUG
mid-Michigan
