MetroMac was sent up with the goal of keeping costs as low as possible,
and encouraging participation as the hallmark of membership, rather
than dues payment. The only expenses we've had were URL registration
fees, and some printing and T-shirts for Macworld. Meeting space has
been free, we publish our newsletter electronically, and a member
provides our web-hosting. We've added a voluntary Supporting
membership tier for $20 to build some revenue for marketing efforts and
some A/V equipment, but basic membership remains free.

I have a quick question about dues. It hasn't gotten any cheaper to
run a
group, but I have noticed that some groups are modifying their dues
because
they believe it has an impact on memberships.
Some give students a discount in order to increase youth members. Some
have
gone dues-free to compete with internet groups. So, I wonder if people
think
dues makes a difference? Does your group have folk that avoid paying
the few $ a
year? Give students a break?
