SMUG has a flat rate fee of $30 for members, and a family membership is the same. Our fees go to insurance, our meeting location, demonstration equipment, and occasionally a small summer party.
We print out a member created newsletter, and mail it out monthly. We have a raffle at the meetings for members with either donated stuff or the occasional purchase. These costs come out of our dues of course.
Our website is member maintained and donated webspace keeps it online. Our volunteers really do their jobs well, in all aspects of the operation of the group. I wish there were more fringe benefits for them, they deserve it. Truthfully, those in the inner circle of SMUG are giving valuable time that goes without recompense, we still aren't paying anyone.
Dues are integral to providing us with the ability to function. I wish we could do this for free, but thats not possible. For a group our size, and the percentage that come for our meetings, a rented location is just the first of many expenses. Like I said, with that comes other costs. But we do okay, and I think we have a pretty good group. It has been 25 years after all...
