Hi Rick,
I haven't run an iChat as part of a MUG meeting for JoMacs, but was the
virtual guest at the NW Apple Pickers meeting (WA) back in February
(wearing my AUG RL hat). So, I can give you my first experience at
trying to be the guest at an iChat meeting.
First, it wasn't a total flop, or even a failure. I have very good DSL
at home (almost a 1mb connection), and they had a good connection on
their end also. Neither one of us was having to deal with firewalls. I
put together a presentation that included some movies I had put
together from Macworld, and with the band width, they came through ok
on their end.
The way I ran the setup was using a projector and using the iSight to
capture the projected image & myself, so I was able to run the
presentation at full screen. On their end, they had their computer
connected to a projector so the group could see. I'm not sure if the
image on their end was pixelated or not.
The big challenges I faced was; 1. not being able to see my audience -
as a speaker, this is key to make sure my audience was keeping up with
me. 2. when running the presentation full screen, I couldn't see where
on the iSight picture I was showing up in. 3. Audio - the iSight picked
up my voice fine, and it picked up the audio from my speakers when the
movies were playing, but if I wasn't careful, I'd get feedback between
the two.
I think it has a lot of positive potential, but is going to take some
getting used to. I plan on using it more to connect with groups there's
no way I could visit otherwise. The biggest draw backs are both ends
having sufficient bandwidth to handle a smooth presentation, and
dealing with any firewalls.
If you want to run a "test" meeting, let me know, I'm game :)
Cheers!

I am sure many of you think there can be nothing better than running a
User
Group in Maui. But the price of paradise limits us from always having
guest
speakers. There are two Mac software companies on Oahu we have
brought over
to be guest speakers and once in a great while, we have had some
vacationing
guest speakers. With the advent of iChatAV and the iSight, our group
has
begun to look into having virtual guest. I was wondering if any other
groups have had any such meetings or looked into the idea.
