Our group here in Lakeland is very much a retirement community group
with 25-30 attending each month. Meetings are held at a local church.
We start at 6 PM with two break out groups, beginners have a class
conducted by two teachers on basic topics. Others meet separately for
a Q&A bull session. At 630 PM, everyone meets for a half hour of pizza
and social time. At 7, our programs start and run for an hour to an
hour and a half. A door prize raffle happens just before closing.
Our sister group in Orlando is more yuppie in nature and meets at the
Orlando Science Center. It runs much like Lakeland, minus the break
out discussions. 30-60 can be expected each month. They have a
wireless internet connection and 10-12 have their laptops up and
running during the meetings. Last week, with the help of a borrowed
iSight, Lorene was even introduced and in attendance for a few minutes.
Both groups have their own projector (every MUG needs to get one).
With the camera, internet connection and projector, presentations can
be made remotely.
We do have a problem getting outside speakers. Wacom has visited
several times. Apple has sent a speaker from Atlanta. Since Keynote
came out, I have enjoyed scrounging the internet for subjects.
Photoshop Tips are presented each month. Lately we are showing Breen's
Bungalow to everyone. Vendor deals and odds 'n ends are sent out in a
mid-month email to members. Our newsletter gets posted on the website
a week before the meetings and mailed out to be in the box a couple
days prior. Everyone should keep an eye out for free Seminars, Adobe
and NAPP have them several times a year in Tampa. Apple's On-line
seminars are interesting and informative. QT movies can be saved in QT
Pro, and presented at meetings.
I would sure like to see more Apple logo'd merchandise available.
Pens, stickers and notepads come to mind. User Group T-shirts could
easily be sold to members. The ASW site should be made easier to
navigate. The Apple Mailbox does provide a lot of good stuff. We
have Apple Stores in Tampa and Orlando, both about an hour away. There
is little interaction between the MUGs and the Stores.

We are always looking for new ways to mix it up and not stay with the
same
old structure each month. So I am looking for some creative ideas.
How do you do your meetings?
