I mentioned this at the end of the UG leader chat on WWB Tuesday
evening.
We don't have any term limits. I understand the thinking behind having
them. But will it REALLY force others to pick up the ball?
We have not always been able to fill vacancies. The first half of 2000
was a particularly bad time for us. We were operating without a
President or Vice President. Several Core members took turns a month at
a time filling minimal duties of those jobs. In late May or early June,
Chris Zazzara, tired of our hemming and hawing, pleaded with the Core
members by phone to give him the Presidency. Another readily agreed to
be his VP and the two of them quickly had us back on track.
So, maybe Sam's UG isn't always a bad thing.
We don't know what the answer is to getting more people more involved.
We've talked about it many times. It mostly seems to be something that
is either already in a person, waiting to be nurtured a little, or it
isn't. Those people we have persuaded to do certain tasks, such as
helping with putting a newsletter mailing together, seem content to
just continue on that same level. So how do you persuade them to move
on to the next level?
Until you DO persuade them, what happens to the UG?
Forcing the issue didn't seem to work for us that one time. The person
who finally took the reins of SMUG in 2000 wasn't new blood. He was one
who has held the presidency of our group many times over the years.
