"Founder Syndrome" and "Officers for Life" are recipes that lead to
failure in many kinds fo volunteer activities. Couple these with the
need to retain "Institutional memory" in order to assure contunuity of
operations and you can have a real conundrum.
Washington Apple Pi is going through a transition to a term-limited
regime. It features a rotating board in which 5 of 15 members' terms
expire each year. No one is allowed to serve for more than 3 years in
any 4 year period. These bylaws also provide an array of committees
that are supposed to be staffed by volunteers. That part has not been
tested yet, but a new slate of BoD members leavend by the presence of
some returning members is supposed to be in place by mid June.
