Rick,
Although it's not under $50, a /very good/ screen capture product
(IMHO) for both static and motion capture is SnapzPro X (w/movies) from
Ambrosia Software <http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/>.
I've used it for many a specialized screen shot (static menus pulled
down; open dialog boxes and the like) and have recently used it for
just the kind of thing you mention in your post (as a demo for a
Beginners SIG). I think it works very well.

I am
wondering what software you use to do video captures. I would like to
make some
quick time movies to show our members how to do some simple Mac
activities.
Pull down a menu and the "About this Mac" windows appears. You move
your cursor
to point where the window tells you how much RAM you have. You move
the cursor
up to show what system you are using. There must be something that
records
the movements for under $50.00.
