That sounds like a fascinating paper topic, Sarah. I hope you'll share your
results with us - it should make for some fascinating reading.
As far as the history of individual groups goes (as opposed to the history
of the user group program), some group websites include information on the
group's founding or history. I know that PMUG (Princeton Mac User Group) has
a history page because it was written by my late father, Philip Thompson:

Are there any other groups out there with history pages that might be
