Dear Greg,
We US Mugs are not pleased to learn what you described.
Similar has been written at various times in the past by other non
US MUG members. Someone like myself can only puzzle and ponder why
any company which so needs and loves good press would act as you
describe. But I cannot and should not say more as I don't feel I
understand the full picture.
I also want to clarify that US MUGS do not roll in a wonderland of
free things APPLE. IF you read this list , for instance, you will
soon see that to be the case. Only a handful of MUGS, for instance,
have been able to use the Apple Stores for their programs; this ,
BTW, seems to hinge completely on the individual store managers'
whim, not on a global APPLE policy.
Different parts of the country vary in how easily APPLE reps are
available to come to MUG meetings.
Most MUGs do not receive gobs from APPLE; we can have our
ambassador sign up to purchase Apple Promo items and we can earn free
dot mac accounts for our MUGS but that is about it.
IF a MUG receives hardware, again, that is often the generosity of an
individual local manager who has items to give and that is rare ( my
MUG received a 5300 PowerBook some umpteen years ago . That was it!
And only because MUG officers had repeatedly attended various open
seminars so we had been "seen" sufficiently to attract attention from
an empathetic midwest account manager).
MUG relationship with Apple has been a recurring topic of discussion
and if you read here, you will see all sides of the equation.
Good Luck, "Down Under". Your group sounds very active and in the
end, it is your local Mac users who benefit from and give value to
your group.
Sincerely
