Another one of BeiMac's stories that we wish to share...
I think it's been said before, but I'll said it again. User groups are
labours of love, are communities, and are not government -- in any
form. Having said that, if you focus less on promulgating new and
ridiculous regulations and focus more on increasing meeting turnout and
enhancing meeting quality, you've done it.
June 2004: We suffered the worst. The "Central Executives Committee"
scandal was just past last autumn. We had about 5 - 6 members at any
meeting after October 2003. It was obvious that while we were trying
our best to defend against the potential attacks by the other user
group in Beijing, "MacFans", we were killing ourselves at the same
time. The switchover to the "Beijing Macintosh Union" should have
turned things around. It didn't. A 90-article long Constitution sounded
the death knell for the newly-born union. In all of the first half of
2004, there was just 1 meeting attended by 8 people.
June 2005: Sure, nobody turned out for the January meeting. Nobody's
fault -- who's turning out in this frigid weather? But come March, and
the bar proprietors would be overwhelmed with a massive influx of Mac
people. We had Mac people come in by the truckload for our March 2005
meeting, beating our previous record of 24 people by just one soul --
but that was enough already. Our April 2005 meeting saw an attendance
of 29. Our May 2005 meeting saw 31 people squeeze into the room. We
were running out of space. People nearly had to be hanged from above to
take part in our meeting. We busted records, three times in a row. Our
June 2005 meeting had another 18 people come to the meeting, making the
total number of people taking part in our meetings in the 1st half of
2005 a shocking 103. Do the maths: that's an increase 12-fold, or
1,288%.
What this means to you:
If you feel you've got more time for the group, use that spare time for
enhancing meetings, and not creating so many regulations that you
finish with a Mac micronation. The Mac UN won't like to recognise it.

BTW -- be sure to keep some application forms handy -- BeiMac was able
to snatch 35 members this way, in just 4 meetings!
