While I certainly wouldn't oppose anyone wanting to help MacCommunity folks
in particular, I would do so with correct facts.
The American Red Cross does NOT have a high overhead. As a matter of fact,
91% goes directly to their program (clients). According to
charitynavigator.com, whose purpose is to evaluate charity's for their
effectiveness the American Red Cross is a 4-star charity - top of the
line. You may also designate your gift to specific programs, in this case
most are interested in helping Hurricane Katrina victims (which, by the way,
are treated equally and given equal aid.)
By all means, help those you know, I would do the same, but please do not
discredit the Red Cross with erroneous innuendo. This does a disservice to
the thousands of people that are relying on their help. (Which is the only
reason why I'm responding to a non-user group topic on a user group
listserv.)
After all, both the President and Apple Computer recommend donations to the
American Red Cross.
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this horrible
disaster.
