First, for anyone interedted, here's Apple's web page dealing with
idea submission: <http://www.apple.com/legal/policipes/ideas.html>
I disagree with Matt (and especially with all his "grow up!" type
language, as if all opinions counter to his are immature...geez).
Apple could have drafted a special response to this child's letter.
The fact that it did not should alert Apple that there are
deficiencies in its response system, that, in fact, there was no one
at the underling level who either had the presence of mind that the
form response wouldn't do OR who was not empowered to deviate from a
certain policy (I doubt a lawyer ever saw the girls' letter; more
likely an admin. assistant merely pulled form letter 113 from the
bin and sent it).
If a corporation convinces itself that it has grown too big to
concern itself with the *human* interface, than it is the corporation
that needs to reconsider how it relates to the average Joe (or Susie
or Melissa...) who dares write it a letter. Indeed, it IS possible to
include the necessary legalities in an otherwise friendly-toned
letter; to those who say it is not merely don't wish to take the
time to do it.
Bottom line: had this story been about a response letter from
Microsoft to the girl, wouldn't we all be having a lot of fun with
it, poking our fingers toward Richmond, smug with assurance that warm
'n fuzzy Apple would never do such a thing?
