We at BeiMac -- finally -- have a permanent meeting place. It's in
this very nice Chinese courtyard... pics are here

(that's our most recent meeting)
We FINALLY (double all caps for emphasis) have a permanent meeting
spot, after 5 years roaming about. Our meetings also have a permanent
rule: every 3rd Sat per month, 3 - 6 PM. (Beijing time, of course.)
This place is really popular. It's a brill mix between the old and
the new, the glitzy and the traditional. They've done a great job of
setting up the courtyard. Our hall holds up to 80 people -- seating
is really flexible, so even though our last meeting only saw 27 turn
up, we made it feel kind of crowded nonetheless. We got 80% of the
place in use.
Our goal -- that Great Hall of the People -- 10K people. ;-)
(Actually, not really... but would be great if we could get that many
folks together...)
Oh yeah - we also get free wifi (pretty zippy), and free drinks! :-)
Big screen, good sound system... it costs quite a bit, but it's
within our reach.

PS: We actually have a new Mac user who works at the new venue. One
more liberated... ;-)

We've met in various locations but I think we've found a more
permanent solution. We met in a government cultural complex, a bar
in a hotel, a private college, a small conference room at a private
business, and now in a conference room for a major department store
retailer here in the UAE. We've got a good relationship with them
and have done events and things together with them. It's a nice
conference room, takes up to 40 people, really big screen which we
can hook up a Mac to, and free wifi ;-) So far it's a symbiosis
that has worked out pretty well and until we grow a lot beyond
where we are now, it'll be big enough.
