Just today I got a great lead on a meeting room. It is through the
county transit system. They have a new building and meeting rooms are
free. I am excited to see just what is available. We currently meeting
in a county library and previously were at a senior center on a Jr.
College campus. Finding free or inexpensive rooms is a real challenge.
Some do not know that many malls have meeting rooms. They usually
require a deposit and you get it back when you finish using the
facility.
Our small group is always about the same. We have around 70 members.
Anywhere from 20-35 come to a meeting. Our demographics are: older
citizens, a few still working, most interest is in photography. We are
a very diverse group with members having interests in all manner of
topics including quite a few with an interest in Linux. We are a
partner with the local PC group and cross advertise & have reciprocity
with them for meetings or classes.
The best time you can invest is having people willing to submit your
meeting info to the papers, libraries, bulliten boards, and public
kiskos. We have such a member and since her efforts we have seen our
group retain its membership. (It was beginning to dwindle when she
began this effort.) CompUSA did us no real favors. They didn't know
much about Macs (except for the Apple sales rep.) and always forgot to
handout our newsletters we left there for perspective members. You can
not count on a business to grow your non-profit UG. You need to
network with them, help them and you'll help yourself. We all know
that all of this takes time. And as a group enters into a death
spirial we know that the hardest thing is to know when to pull the
plug. Too soon and you might miss a chance to grow; too late and
you're wornout and used up. Let's hope that those that have died will
arise like the phoenix, of legends.
