Dream don't die
The fact that you use Apple products and read and follow this list
shows that you have both the influence and affluence to make a
positive change in people's lives.
Some of you may remember the "Adopt-a-Teacher" program launched
by the User Group Network and the Appleseeds Foundation in 2005.
http://www.user-groups.net/articles/appleseeds_foundation.html
It was the evolution of an earlier program conducted by the User
Group Academy in the late 1990s to early 2000s. All through the
years of my involvement with user groups, I have strived to
find ways to spread the good vibes of Mac users to others.
From the early days of C.U.S.R., Home & School Mac, Appleseeds
Awards, NAUGSAWs, UG Academy, and other programs, I've pushed
the idea of sharing the knowledge with your local community.
Unfortunately, Apple's "teacher" program closed, and all the
links went dead. No user groups responded or participated in
the program. While that was a great disappointment to me,
there was a silver lining to the story.
Appleseeds has continued its philanthropic work and in 2008 was
able to conduct the first "Appleseeds Technology Awards" through
the school systems of north-western Virginia and the Technology
Students Association of America. This endowed program will
continue to promote innovation in public schools, and make
sure bright young innovators get the recognition and inspiration
they need to build a better tomorrow.
Computer clubs and user groups have always been in a unique
position to make a positive impact on their communities
through charitable programs and partnerships.
I encourage you and your club to seek out ways to spread your
knowledge and resources into areas of your community -- and
change the lives of people and their quality of life.
It will pay dividends for your group in many different ways.
If your club is already engaged in a philanthropic community
endeavor, please send me an email and tell me about it.
We would like to spread the news and stories of your programs
so we can inspire others to embark on their own projects
for their communities.
Thanks for reading
Fred
PS: Your group can bring the "Appleseeds Technology Awards"
to your local schools. If your group would like to partner
in this program, send an email. We'll show you how it works
and how you can raise the bar for your local technology students.

Holiday message from Lynn and Fred
We've seen another year whisk by, and have enjoyed sharing
more than 700 content items with you and your fellow UG members.
We hope you've enjoyed our newsletter, and hope you've found
at least one item that helped you in some way.
Gloria Steinem once said:
... "It is more rewarding to watch money change the world
than watch it accumulate."
We believe this. And, during this season -- and all through
the year, think about those less fortunate than yourself.
Do something for someone else. Help change people's lives.
Have a joyous, safe, and healthy holiday and then a great 2009
Lynn and Fred
